My dream is that one day no one will die from respiratory failure as a result of breathing muscle weakness. Until that day arrives, I firmly believe those of us who live with Neuromuscular Disease (NMD), in particular adults, must be proactive in all areas of our care.
This means being as knowledgeable as possible about our own specific NMD, even obtaining genetic testing to learn an accurate and complete diagnosis. Further, we must be advocates for our own appropriate care, the most important of which is respiratory care.
When my middle sister died from inappropriate care for respiratory failure on my birthday in 2007, it became my passion to learn as much as possible about breathing muscle weakness and share that information with others who live with NMD. I read as many medical books and published articles as I could get my hands on and was determined to find an avenue to share what I had learned. I created Breathe with MD in memory of my sister Cheryl for all of my "brothers and sisters" across the globe who live with NMD. This organization is for you!
Today's medical advances and in particular non-invasive ventilation mean we can do anything we set our minds to. We can live fulfilling lives and thrive, even if we need ventilation assistance! I hope that Breathe with MD, Inc. and the educational resources it provides will be a blessing to you and give you a sense of calm from knowing you are not alone and that there are successful interventions for breathing muscle weakness.
If you are living with a NMD, I encourage you to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and/or Instagram. You are also invited to join our Breathe with MD Support group on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube Channel.
Sincerely,
Andrea Klein
