Respiratory Peer Mentee
This page is for enrolling in the "Breathing Muscle Weakness 101" course as a mentee (enroll at the bottom of this page). You may be a Neuromuscular Disease (NMD) affected individual who is 18 years of age or older and may or may not be using breathing equipment such as bi-level ventilation (BiPAP, BPAP, or a portable ventilator used non-invasively or invasively with a trach tube), biphasic cuirass ventilation (BCV), and/or a mechanically assisted cough/secretion clearance device (i.e., a cough assist). You may anticipate the use of such equipment in the future.

As a mentee, you may also be a l
oved one who is 18 years of age or older (i.e. a parent, guardian, sibling, spouse, significant other, or partner) of a Neuromuscular Disease (NMD) affected individual who may or may not be using breathing equipment such as bi-level ventilation (BiPAP, BPAP, or a portable ventilator used non-invasively or invasively with a trach tube), biphasic cuirass ventilation (BCV), and/or a mechanically assisted cough/secretion clearance device (i.e. a cough assist). Your loved one is anticipated to use such equipment in the future.

Mentees must:
  • be 18 years of age or older,
  • be able to read, write, and speak English
  • complete the lessons in "Breathing Muscle Weakness 101,"
  • participate in a live mentoring kick-off/introduction meeting where the program's guidelines will be reviewed, and
  • before being paired with a mentor, sign and return an agreement to follow the program's guidelines for the duration of the mentor/mentee pairing relationship.

A mentee's role will involve direct interactions with a mentor such as:
  • emailing/direct messaging on social media,
  • periodically meeting the mentee via video conference, and/or
  • other appropriate means of meeting that are agreed to by both parties, such as texting or phone calls

Efforts will be made to match each mentee to a respiratory peer mentor, but matching will depend on the applicants who enroll.

Frequently asked questions:
If I participated in a past mentoring program, can I participate again?
Yes, you are welcome to enroll in the 2024 program.

Will this program cover the same educational content as what was covered in 2021 and 2022? Yes, and no. Much of it is the same content, but it is being presented in greater depth for certain topics and in a different format.

If I was a mentee previously, can I enroll as a mentee again? Yes, and whether or not you are paired with a mentor depends upon who enrolls in the course. For example, if significantly more mentees enroll than mentor candidates, there may be some mentees who unfortunately do not get assigned to a mentor.
