Enroll in Course as A Respiratory Peer Mentor
The "Breathing Muscle Weakness 101" course content (enroll at the bottom of this page), will equip a potential respiratory peer mentor to be successful in their mentor/mentee relationship. The mentor's objectives will be to listen, share relevant experiences, offer factual information and trustworthy resources, and be supportive of the mentee with the primary goal of helping them manage their respiratory care while optimizing their health and well-being. The individual in the respiratory peer mentor role must let the program's director know via email, text, or phone call, as soon as possible, if a mentee is unresponsive and cannot be reached.

Efforts will be made to match each approved mentor to one or more mentees (up to 3, pending the mentor's availability and preference). Matching will depend on the applicants who apply. There is a possibility that an approved mentor will be without a matched mentee.

If I participated in a past mentoring program, can I participate again? Yes, you are welcome to enroll in the 2024 program.
Will this program cover the same educational content as what was covered in 2021 and 2022? Yes, and no. Much of it is the same content, but it is being presented in greater depth for certain topics and in a different format.
If I was a mentor previously, can I mentor again? Our online program requires all mentor candidates to complete the 2024 online course and pass a quiz in the course platform to ensure they will be a successful mentor. Whether or not you are paired with an enrolled mentee also depends upon who enrolls in the course. For example, if more mentors enroll than mentees, there may be some mentors who do not get assigned to a mentee.

- emailing/direct messaging on social media,
- periodically meeting the mentee via video conference, and/or
- other appropriate means of meeting that are agreed to by both parties, such as texting or phone calls.
Respiratory peer mentors must:
- be 18 years of age or older,
- be able to read, write, and speak English
- complete the lessons in "Breathing Muscle Weakness 101,"
- pass a quiz based on key topics covered in the course,
- participate in a live mentoring kick-off/introduction meeting where the program's guidelines will be reviewed, and
- before being paired with a mentee, sign and return an agreement to follow the program's guidelines for the duration of the mentor/mentee pairing relationship.
